Deliverables
In addition to the course, I created supplemental PDFs that learners can download and use for shopping and as a part of their cycling routines. I found that these were especially helpful for older adults who are not as tech savey. The deliverables match up with each module from the course; the gear guide aligning with both the shopping and final sweep challenge. This was my first time embedding PDFs into storyline, and I look forward to creating more quick guides (both downloadable and digitally interactive options) in the future.
This infographic includes two versions:
Visual only poster intended to be hung as a poster in cycling shops.
Visual with description intended to be printed and distributed as a one-page quick view reference.
Content on this deliverable: the six primary cycling hand signals: stopping, turn left, turn right, hazard, railroad tracks, and go ahead.
This catalog provides new riders with a quick guide on essential cycling gear by breaking down the basic options and function of each item. Features include
Shopping options
Prioritized placement of most essential items followed by nice-to-have options
Bonus phone features page
Comparison of bike fuel options
This checklist was created to use in alignment with the weekly new-riders activities so that riders can check off when they have completed each safety check. Topics covered include: Pre-ride safety check, planning a route, where to ride, intersections, visibility, preparing for weather, helmet use, technology, hydration and fuel, multiple riders, flat tires, accident plans, and storage and maintenance.
Project Details
I created this course to help new adult cyclists navigate the sometimes-overwhelming world of cycling gear. Inspired by my own experience in the Louisville Bicycle Club’s New Rider & Bicycle Handling Classes, I found many beginners struggling to know which items to prioritize.
The course uses a backward design approach to focus on essential content, divided into four sections: hand signals, safety tips, cycling gear info, and gear identification. Learners are immediately engaged through gamified trivia, styled after Supermarket Sweep, with scorekeeping, timers, and themed audio.
A virtual shopping environment allows learners to explore gear at their own pace, with options for skipping sections to match different skill levels. The final challenge recreates the energy of the show’s final sweep, with randomized questions and a downloadable gear guide for reference.
I designed the course to be light, fun, and flexible, so busy adults can complete it in short bursts (at a child’s sports practice, waiting for an appointment, or during a commute) without needing video or audio.
